Friendly Visitor

Much to my surprise and that of my little dachshund, this friendly deer wandered into our yard yesterday.  He politely posed for three, good photographs. (And a handful of really blurry ones.)  We stared at him.  And he stared back at us.  He definitely added excitement to our late afternoon walk.  I hope to see (and paint) him again.

Our first winter storm is brewing outside.  It's cold and dark.  And spitting tiny snowflakes.  Dire weather predictions abound, but I love this kind of weather.  Welcome, December!  I am happy to see you!

Stay warm!

Beautiful job on this, Darla! The anatomy for this guy or gal is spot-on (something that stands out as a sore thumb to me from my years doing equine sculpture).

We frequently have deer (mule deer, though) that wander into neighborhoods and hang out in people's yards. I have photos of some, if you ever want additional sources to paint from ;).

Thank you, Sonya! I took the photo with my iPhone, so it wasn't the best of references. It did, however, force me to focus on the shapes and colors. And that always helps me to not get too bogged down with detail.

I wish we lived closer. I would love to take a landscape painting class from you! I am familiar with a few of the basic rules, but somehow, they always seem to get lost in my execution. I need to spend more time painting outdoors. I think that would help me a great deal. And it would be fun, too!

Thanks again for your kind comments. I appreciate it!

Thank you, Page. I will try to remember to post a pic of Rodeo next time. He is about the same size as your little Abby, but he is a short-haired dachshund. And all boy, lol. But he is great company. :)

Really enjoy your blog! Love the light you achieve in your paintings. And I hope you're recovering nicely from your surgery.
